AI sales coaching software: what it should do, how to evaluate it, and where it stops

AI sales coaching software listens to real sales conversations, scores them against a method, tells each rep what to change, and lets them practise it. The good platforms coach on evidence. The weak ones produce dashboards nobody opens after the third week.

A sales manager coaches on what they saw. In most field teams, they see almost nothing: the meeting happened in a living room forty kilometres away. AI sales coaching software exists to close that gap, and it is only as good as the conversations it can actually hear.

What an AI sales coaching platform does

An AI sales coaching platform turns sales conversations into coaching. It captures the conversation, transcribes it, compares what the rep did with what your method says they should do, and returns specific feedback: this question was missing, this objection was answered too early, this meeting ended without a dated next step. The better platforms also let the rep rehearse the weak moment and let the manager see progress over weeks, not only a score per meeting.

It is not a replacement for the manager. It replaces the part of coaching that does not scale: listening to hours of meetings to find the three minutes that matter.

The five jobs AI sales coaching software must do

  • Capture the real conversation. Every meeting that matters, including the ones that happen face to face, with the client's consent. A platform that only hears video calls coaches a fraction of a field team's selling.
  • Score against your method. Your discovery questions, your way of presenting price, your definition of a next step. A generic rubric rewards generic behaviour.
  • Point to the evidence. Each coaching point should link to the exact passage of the transcript. "Improve your discovery" is an opinion. "At minute 14 you presented the offer before asking about the budget" is coaching.
  • Turn weaknesses into practice. The objection a rep fumbled on Tuesday should become the roleplay they rehearse on Wednesday.
  • Close the loop after the meeting. Summary, CRM update, follow-up and next steps, so the rep spends the evening selling or resting, not typing.

Most tools on the market do two or three of these well. The question is which two or three your team needs most, and whether the missing ones are the ones your managers spend their evenings on.

Why AI sales coaching is different for field and in-person teams

Conversation intelligence grew up in inside sales, where every call already passes through a phone system or a video platform. Recording is a setting. In the field, there is no system to plug into: the meeting happens across a kitchen table, in a showroom or on a building site, often with two decision-makers and a child in the next room. Capture has to happen on the rep's phone, in a noisy room, with a consent step the client understands.

The coaching content also differs. A two-hour home visit has phases a thirty-minute video call does not: the tour of the house, the technical check, the moment the spouse joins, the price on paper. A rubric built for software demos misses the moments where field deals are actually won or lost. See our guide on how to coach sales reps for the manager's side of this.

What to take away

Before comparing features, ask one question: can this platform hear the meetings where your deals are actually decided? If most of them happen in person and the tool only hears calls, you are buying coaching for the smallest part of the job.

How to evaluate AI sales coaching software

Run a trial on your own meetings, not on the vendor's demo data, and check the following:

  • Transcription quality in your conditions. Your languages, your accents, your rooms. Test it in a real home visit or showroom, not in a quiet office.
  • Your method, loaded as it is. Can you import your own playbook or observation grid, or do you have to adopt the vendor's?
  • Evidence on every point. Open ten coaching points at random. Each should take you to the passage that justifies it.
  • Consent and data location. How is the client's consent captured, where are recordings stored, who can listen to them, and what does the tool refuse to do (voiceprints, emotion analysis)?
  • Adoption after week three. Ask how many reps open their feedback without being reminded. A tool that needs a manager to chase every rep is a reporting tool.

Rolling out AI sales coaching in 90 days

Weeks 1 to 4: two or three volunteer reps, one manager, every meeting recorded with consent, your method loaded as the scoring grid. The manager reviews one meeting per rep per week, starting from the passages the AI flagged. Weeks 5 to 8: extend to the team, add roleplay on the two objections that come up most. Weeks 9 to 12: compare each rep with themselves, not with each other, on two or three behaviours, and decide whether to keep going based on those behaviours and on close rate over a rolling window (our guide to close rate explains how to measure it without fooling yourself).

What AI coaching does not do

It does not decide what good selling looks like in your market: you do, when you write the method. It does not motivate a rep who has stopped caring. It does not replace the ride-along that builds trust between a new rep and their manager. And it should not guess feelings from a voice. Emotion inference in the workplace is prohibited under the EU AI Act, which is one reason serious platforms stay with what was said and done.

MIHOS: AI sales coaching built for in-person selling

MIHOS records in-person sales meetings with the client's consent, scores each one against your own method, and gives each rep personalised coaching in which every point links back to the timestamped passage of the transcript. The objections clients actually raised become AI roleplays, and follow-ups, next steps and updates to the CRM fields your admin approves are handled automatically. Recordings are stored in Switzerland, with no voiceprint and no emotion analysis. An independent advisor in the Swiss Life Select network reported a +28% close rate in 3 months.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between conversation intelligence and AI sales coaching? Conversation intelligence records and analyses conversations, often for deal visibility and forecasting. AI sales coaching uses the same material to change a rep's behaviour: specific feedback, evidence and practice. Many platforms do some of both.

Can AI sales coaching work for in-person meetings? Yes, if the platform captures the meeting on a phone or a dedicated device, handles the client's consent, and scores the phases specific to a face-to-face visit. Check this in a trial on real meetings.

Do reps accept being recorded? Most resistance fades when the recordings are used for coaching rather than surveillance, when reps see their own progress, and when the rules on who listens to what are written down and respected.

How long before AI coaching shows results? Behaviour changes can be visible within a few weeks on the specific points being coached. Close rate takes longer to read reliably, because it needs enough meetings per rep to be stable.

Method

This guide describes common capabilities of AI sales coaching platforms, not a ranking of vendors. The customer result is reported by one independent advisor and is not a guaranteed outcome. On the EU AI Act and emotion inference, see our article on emotion recognition in sales tools.
