A Gong alternative for field and in-person sales teams: an honest comparison

Gong is one of the reference platforms for recorded sales conversations. It was built around the call. This page is for teams whose deals are won at a kitchen table, in a showroom or in a client's office, and who want to know whether a different tool fits better.

Most people searching for a Gong alternative sell on video calls and want something lighter or cheaper. This page answers a different question: which tool fits a team whose reps sell face to face, in meetings where no call is ever placed. For that team, the right choice depends less on the brand than on the meeting the tool was designed for.

What Gong is, and who it fits well

Gong describes itself as a Revenue AI OS. Around the recorded conversation, it offers several applications: Gong Engage for sales engagement, Gong Forecast for forecasting, Gong Enable for coaching and training, and AI agents that automate follow-ups, pipeline edits and forecast corrections. Its integrations directory lists CRMs including Salesforce, HubSpot and Microsoft Dynamics, and video tools including Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

On the coaching side, Gong Enable lists an AI Call Reviewer that scores calls automatically, an AI Trainer that turns past calls into role-play scenarios, and Dry Run, which lets a rep rehearse an upcoming meeting with AI. New customers can store their data in AWS data centres in the US or in the EU. It is a broad, mature platform, and the breadth is the point.

That makes Gong a strong fit for a clear profile:

  • Teams that sell mostly over video and phone. Inside sales, SaaS account executives, SDR and customer success teams: every conversation already happens on a platform Gong can record.
  • Revenue organisations that want one system for conversation data, pipeline, forecasting and sales engagement, with an operations team to configure and run it.
  • Companies for which US or EU hosting is enough for their own compliance and for their customers' expectations.

If that describes your team, Gong is probably the better choice, and nothing on this page should change that.

Where a call-first platform stops for field teams

Gong can record face-to-face meetings. Its help centre explains that the Gong mobile app records spontaneous face-to-face meetings that are not in the calendar, that these recordings are audio only, and that quality may not be optimal in a noisy environment. For a team that sells on calls and occasionally sees a client in person, that closes the gap. The wider question of how to capture a physical meeting is covered in our guide to recording in-person meetings.

For a team where the in-person meeting is the job, recording is only the first step. The meeting is planned, it takes place in the client's home or a showroom, it lasts an hour or more, and the person across the table is often a private individual who has never heard of conversation intelligence. What decides whether the tool works is what surrounds the recording:

  • Consent in the room. How the rep asks for it, how the client's answer is kept, and what happens when the client says no.
  • Coaching against your own method. Whether the meeting is scored against the steps your playbook defines for a home visit or a showroom meeting, rather than a framework written for calls.
  • Practice on the objections your market raises. The spouse who is not in the room, the neighbour who had a bad installer, the advisor the client already trusts.
  • Where the recordings are stored. For Swiss teams and their clients, EU hosting and Swiss hosting are not always the same answer.
  • What reaches the CRM. Whether notes, next steps and follow-ups land in the CRM without the rep typing them in the car between two appointments.

What to test before choosing a Gong alternative

Run the same test on every tool you shortlist, Gong included. Take three real appointments from next week, with the clients' consent, and ask each vendor to show what the rep and the manager will see the day after. Not a demo recording made in an office: your meetings, your clients, your language, your noise. A Swiss field meeting can switch between French, Swiss German and Italian, take place in a basement with no signal and have three voices at the table.

Then check the consent flow with your legal adviser. In Switzerland, recording a non-public conversation without the consent of the other participants falls under art. 179ter of the Criminal Code. This is not legal advice; our article on art. 179ter and sales meetings sets out the practical points. Finally, look at the rep's view, not only the manager's dashboard. A tool reps never open coaches nobody.

What to take away

Choose on the meeting you actually hold. If most of your deals are won on video calls, a call-first platform such as Gong fits. If they are won at a kitchen table, test every tool on real home visits, with real client consent, before you sign.

When MIHOS is the better fit, and when it is not

MIHOS was built for one situation: the in-person sales meeting. It records the meeting with the client's consent, scores it against your own method, links every coaching point to the timestamped passage of the transcript, turns the objections your clients actually raise into AI roleplays, and handles follow-ups, next steps and updates to the CRM fields your admin approves. Recordings are stored in Switzerland. MIHOS uses no voiceprint and no emotion analysis.

It fits teams whose deals are signed face to face: insurance and pension advisors, solar and heat pump installers, HVAC, car dealerships, kitchens and home improvement, security. The sector pages for insurance and energy show what that looks like in practice.

MIHOS is not the better fit if your team sells mainly over video or phone, or if you want forecasting and sales engagement in the same platform as your conversation data. MIHOS does not do forecasting or sequencing. In those cases Gong, or another call-first tool, will serve you better. A mixed organisation can also run both: a call-first platform for the inside team, MIHOS for the reps on the road.

Frequently asked questions

Can Gong record in-person meetings? Yes. According to Gong's help centre, its mobile app records face-to-face meetings as audio. Ask Gong how that fits scheduled field appointments, multiple speakers and your consent process.

Is there a Gong alternative hosted in Switzerland? MIHOS stores its recordings in Switzerland. Gong offers data centres in the US or the EU. Whatever you choose, ask for the exact hosting location and the list of subprocessors in writing.

Does Gong offer AI roleplay? Gong Enable lists an AI Trainer that turns past calls into role-play scenarios, and Dry Run for rehearsing upcoming meetings. MIHOS builds its roleplays from the objections raised in your recorded in-person meetings.

Should a team with both inside and field reps pick a single tool? Not necessarily. Choose per channel, based on where each group wins its deals. Our overview of alternatives and comparisons covers the other tools teams usually shortlist.
