Best field sales software: the four categories, and which layer your team is missing
There is no single best field sales software. There are four layers: the CRM and route planning, visit reporting, coaching on what is said in the meeting, and practice. Most field teams have the first, some the second, few the last two.
Searching for the best field sales software usually returns a list of route planners and mobile CRMs. They matter. But they manage where reps go and what gets logged, not what happens once the rep sits down with the customer, which is where most deals are won or lost.
Best field sales software: four categories, four different jobs
Comparing tools across categories leads to bad choices. Start by deciding which job you need done:
- Field CRM and route planning. Accounts, pipeline, maps, optimised routes, check-ins. It answers: where should my reps be, and what did they log?
- Visit reports and field execution. Structured reports, photos, audits and forms completed on site. It answers: what did the rep see and do at the account?
- Conversation intelligence and coaching for in-person meetings. Recording, with consent, what is said in the meeting, and turning it into coaching. It answers: why did this meeting end the way it did?
- Roleplay and practice. Simulated customer conversations for rehearsing pitches and objections. It answers: is the rep ready before the next meeting?
Field CRM and route planning
The CRM remains the system of record. Many field teams add a mapping and routing layer on top of a general CRM such as Salesforce, HubSpot, Microsoft Dynamics or Pipedrive. Badger Maps presents itself as a B2B field sales platform combining route optimisation, mapping and CRM integration, and lists integrations with those CRMs among others. SPOTIO describes an AI-powered platform for territory management, route optimisation, activity tracking and door-to-door sales, with the line "Your CRM tracks what happened. SPOTIO drives what happens next."
What to check in this layer: offline use on the road, how check-ins and notes sync back to the CRM, how territories are assigned, and whether reps will actually open the app between two appointments. Also check whether managers can see activity by rep without asking for spreadsheets.
Visit reports and field execution
For teams that visit shops, pharmacies or distributors, the visit itself produces data: shelf presence, orders, photos, audits. Repsly, for example, positions itself as retail execution software for field teams in consumer goods, with store visits, photo audits and route planning. For advisory and home visit teams, the visit report is more narrative: the need in the customer's words, the objections, the dated next step. Our customer visit report template shows the fields that matter.
Conversation intelligence and coaching for in-person meetings
Most conversation intelligence tools were built for video calls and phone calls. They join a meeting link, which does not exist in a living room or a showroom. A smaller category records in-person conversations on the rep's phone, with the customer's consent, and turns them into coaching. Rilla describes itself as AI coaching for in-person sales, citing industries such as home improvement, home services and automotive. Siro describes AI sales coaching software for in-person sales teams, with recording on the phone and CRM sync. MIHOS belongs to this category. Our comparison of Rilla alternatives in Europe goes into the differences, and our guide to recording in-person meetings covers the general tools.
Roleplay and practice
AI roleplay lets reps rehearse against a simulated buyer. Second Nature presents AI role plays and coaching for sales and other customer-facing teams. Hyperbound combines AI sales roleplay with scoring of real calls. The key question for field teams is where the scenarios come from: generic personas, or the objections your customers actually raise in your market. Our guide to AI sales roleplay covers what to look for. Roleplay works best when the other layers feed it: the objections captured in real meetings become the scenarios reps rehearse the following week.
What to take away
Route planning decides how many meetings a rep holds. Coaching and practice decide how many of them end in a signature. A field stack with only the first layer optimises the drive and leaves the meeting unmanaged.
How to choose field sales software
A field sales stack is usually bought one layer at a time, over several years. Whatever the layer, the same five checks apply before you sign:
- Start from the gap, not the feature list. If reps waste hours driving, fix routing. If they hold enough meetings but close too few, the gap is in the meeting.
- Keep one system of record. Every layer should write back to the CRM rather than create a second customer database.
- Check consent and data location before recording anything. Recording a customer requires their consent, and where the audio is stored matters in Switzerland and the EU.
- Exclude emotion inference. In the EU, inferring employees' emotions at work is a prohibited AI practice. See our article on the AI Act and emotion inference.
- Test adoption in the field. Run a pilot with real reps on real appointments. A tool reps skip between two visits produces no data.
Where MIHOS fits, and where it does not
MIHOS sits above the CRM, not instead of it. It records in-person meetings with the customer's consent, scores each one against your own method, links every coaching point to the timestamped passage, turns real objections into AI roleplays, and handles the follow-up, next steps and the update of the CRM fields your admin approves from what was actually said. Recordings are stored in Switzerland. MIHOS does not plan routes or manage territories: if that is your gap, start with the first layer.
MIHOS is also not the right choice if your team sells mainly by video or phone: tools built for calls will fit better. It fits teams whose deals are decided in a living room, a showroom or a client's office, where the manager sees the outcome today but never the meeting itself.

Frequently asked questions
What is field sales software? Software that supports sales reps who meet customers in person: mobile CRM, route planning, visit reporting, and increasingly coaching on in-person conversations and roleplay practice.
Do I need a separate app if I already have a CRM? Often yes for route planning and in-person meeting coaching, which general CRMs do not cover on their own. Choose tools that write back to the CRM so it stays the single source of truth.
Can call recording tools like Gong be used for field sales? Most call recording tools are built around phone and video calls. For meetings in a home, a showroom or an office, check that the tool records in person on a phone and handles consent.
What is the best field sales software for small teams? The one that fixes your biggest gap with the least friction. Small teams often start with a CRM mobile app, then add in-person coaching once meeting volume makes close rate the main lever.
